PvP in WoW: Forever: no RP-PvP, less honor in Alterac Valley and an official duel arena
In the PvP episode of the WoW: Forever Podcast, Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield and Tim Jones talked openly about their plans for Player vs Player. Here are the most important points. No RP-PvP ruleset (update: it's coming after all)
Update October 22: Blizzard changed its mind after player feedback. A Roleplay PvP ruleset comes at launch on November 4 after all: https://legendsofazeroth.com/news/an-rp-pvp-ruleset-is-coming-to-wow-forever-after-all Below is what was said in the podcast before that.
For now there are no plans for RP-PvP. In Forever's realm rulesets, RP-PvE is the only roleplay option. According to Aggrend, people remember an RP-PvP realm like Grobbulus in 2019 fondly, but every RP-PvP realm since then went a different way. Blizzard wants to decide based on how players actually behave, not on hope. On top of that the RP community is fairly small compared to Normal and PvP.
Less honor in Alterac Valley, more everywhere else
Every Classic veteran knows the trick: spam Alterac Valley and race to the enemy general, sometimes even losing on purpose because that is faster honor. Blizzard is changing that:
- Alterac Valley gives less honor.
- Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin and Darkspear Islands give a lot more.
- The goal: every battleground should feel worth your time, so you can switch between them.
In the latest beta build Marks of Honor also stack up to 30 (was 20).
No protection against ganking
Content creator Savix asked if there will be protection for low level players against camping by much higher levels. The answer from Aggrend was clear: no. PvP happens on a PvP server, and that has been true for 22 years. If you choose a PvP realm, you accept that you will sometimes have a frustrating session.
An official duel arena for the Forever Open
This weekend, October 17 and 18, the Forever Open takes place: a $100,000 duel tournament on the beta, organised by Tips Out, with around 6,000 participants.
- On day two Blizzard opens an official duel arena in Hyjal Crater, an area that is normally out of reach. Officials help the players get there.
- There will be NPCs selling Soul Shards and reagents, and maybe a vendor that resets cooldowns.
- That arena was planned for later anyway, but Blizzard moved it forward for the tournament.
- You can watch live with the official broadcasters Xaryu and Esfand.
What this means for Legends of Azeroth
Battlegrounds other than AV finally become worth it, so there is honor to earn together in Warsong and Arathi. And this weekend there is a big duel tournament to watch. Who is tuning in? Let us know in Discord!
