Found Photos: new zones, Forsaken paladins and more in WoW: Forever
At BlizzCon the World of Warcraft: Forever team explained how they add new content without losing the feeling of the original game. Azeroth has always made players wonder what lies just beyond the path: a mountain trail that seemed to go on, a sealed gate, a name on the map, a ruin behind the trees that no quest ever sent you to. Forever looks at those familiar corners and turns them into new adventures.
The idea is called found photos, a term Chris Metzen coined in the early talks about new stories for Season of Discovery: places, stories and characters that feel as if they were part of Azeroth all along.
The world as a found photograph
Forever starts where the original World of Warcraft starts: the early "Year 1" of Azeroth, before Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal and long before Northrend changed the timeline. Instead of rushing ahead, the team builds on the original level 1 to 60 world and expands its events, characters and places that exist, or could have existed, in that era.

The focus is on local mysteries, grounded conflicts and characters that never got much attention, the kind of stories that make the world feel big and full of possibilities just off the road. Forever lives in its own "time bubble", so the team can explore these ideas without touching the original stories of Azeroth, while still painting inside the lines of Warcraft lore.
Anticipated, new but familiar, and unexpected
The team sorts new content into three groups:

- Anticipated: places players have known about or wanted to visit for years, like Mount Hyjal.
- New but familiar: fresh stories built on Warcraft history and existing locations, like the Riverglades.
- Unexpected: surprises, used sparingly, that still feel at home in WoW: Forever.
Some additions let you finally step into places you have imagined for years. Others deepen the stories of existing towns, factions and roads. Only a few add new cultures or locations, and never so many that Classic stops feeling like Classic.
New beginnings
Whether you start in the Valley of Trials, Shadowglen or another starting area, WoW: Forever adds NPCs, quests, profession hooks, recipes and small moments that sit next to the original experience. Every starting path gets something fresh, without taking away the Classic memories you bring with you.
New ways to travel
Beyond the starting zones you will find new ship routes. They keep the feeling of crossing a large world, but make it easier for friends to meet, quest together and explore at their own pace.

- Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine: an early link between the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor.
- Menethil, Southshore and Auberdine: another route with more freedom while leveling.
- The Steamwheedle Cartel in Tanaris: the last route sails beyond the known shores to the Riverglades, a mid-level zone about the size of Stranglethorn Vale, built from a part of the Classic world you could never reach, with nearly 200 quests for Horde and Alliance players.
The Riverglades and the roads between
The Riverglades are one of the first big examples of "new but familiar": a land connected to the Burning Steppes, Redridge Mountains, the Swamp of Sorrows and the Badlands, but out of reach until now.

Its harbour, Powderfuse Port, is where the new Steamwheedle route arrives, so the trip across the sea ends somewhere that feels new and yet part of Azeroth.

The zone blends into the world around it. Gnoll camps continue the conflicts of the neighbouring lands, new ogre threats bring tension and opportunities, and groups like the new Powderfuse goblins, the Twilight's Hammer and the Brotherhood of the Horse tie the area to Warcraft history in different ways.
Well-known places get new attention too. The Wetlands gain quests that build on existing characters and stories, and the centaur factions of Desolace get more content and faction rewards. South of Desolace, through the Valley of Bones, Shen'dralas opens a whole new area around the characters and stories of Eldre'Thalas.
Mount Hyjal
Mount Hyjal is the long-awaited discovery: explore the aftermath of the Battle for Mount Hyjal, meet new factions, forge alliances and see where their stories lead. It is one of the clearest examples of opening up a place that has held meaning and mystery since the earliest Warcraft stories.

Forsaken paladins and stories close to home
The same grounded approach goes for people, including the Forsaken paladins. Their story follows straight on from the new Warcraft III campaign Forsaken Kingdom, at a time when these former paladins are deeply mistrusted by other Forsaken and are still learning what it means to wield the Light in undeath.
Bandarion Keep in the Whispering Wood of Tirisfal Glades is the heart of the Forsaken Paladin Journey: a local struggle for acceptance, identity and purpose.
At level 60 Forsaken paladins also get their own epic mount quest. Alliance paladins earn their epic charger in the name of Redemption, the paladins of the Forsaken ride in the name of Retribution.

Their story shows what the team wants from character moments in this version of Azeroth: not huge campaigns for their own sake, but grounded conflicts that grow from the history, fears, factions and unanswered questions of the world.
Zephras Isle and the unexpected
One of the more unexpected additions is Zephras Isle and the Skyborne, also called the shen'dorei or hidden people. Their history starts with rebels who fled Eldre'Thalas after the War of the Ancients and eventually found refuge in Skywall, where wind spirits anchored their island home in the elemental plane.

When you meet them in WoW: Forever, the Skyborne are in crisis. Their elemental patrons have vanished, the pylons that hold Zephras together are failing, and parts of the island are falling into ruin and darkness.
As the crisis deepens, several groups fight for control of Zephras Isle, among them the Windshapers, the High Order and the Al'Aketh. Together they make Zephras an unexpected addition that still fits the larger world of WoW: Forever.

Zephras Isle is meant as a surprising but self-contained experience: unexpected, but added with care and restraint.
Made with the community in mind
From the updated starting zones, world travel, the Riverglades, Mount Hyjal and the Forsaken paladins to Zephras Isle, the idea is always the same: Azeroth should feel like a real place with adventures worth discovering together. A journey through the history of Azeroth that gives players new reasons to gather, explore and come home with stories that belong next to the old ones.
WoW: Forever launches worldwide on November 4, 2026, and the beta starts on September 17.
