Cross-region play and character caps: what Holly and Clay told Fiamma

· by Davina Asaria

At PAX Australia content creator Fiamma sat down with WoW executive producer Holly Longdale and associate production director Clay Stone. You can watch the full interview below. These are the points that matter most for us.

Cross-region play: not yet

  • Playing across regions comes with technical challenges.
  • WoW: Forever is Blizzard's first attempt at going realmless: you only pick a ruleset, not a realm. That works really well in the beta, but this is as far as they can take it for now.
  • It's not that they don't want cross-region play. They simply need time for it.

Character cap: not announced yet

  • How many characters you can make at launch has not been announced yet.
  • There are technical limits on that number.

Forever features in retail?

  • Asked whether Forever features such as the transmog changes could come to retail, Holly answered "yes" straight away.
  • It depends on what fits each game, and she will talk it over with Ion Hazzikostas.

They read everything

  • The team follows feedback everywhere: the forums, Reddit, social media, YouTube videos and even YouTube comments.
  • When a big topic comes up, they have heard it. After that it is about priority, how quickly they can get to it, and whether they agree it is right for the game.
  • There is plenty of feedback from inside Blizzard too: there are massive collectors in the company, and some developers on the Forever team play more retail than Classic.

Art and the team

  • Forever has its own art and training path, separate from retail, with a lot of training, mentoring and talent.

Get to know the developers

  • Holly played at launch and was in the original WoW beta. Her favourite mount right now: the Friendship Fox.
  • Clay started in 2006, just before The Burning Crusade. His favourite mount is the Dire Wolf, because he plays an Orc. Horde, of course!

What this means for Legends of Azeroth

No cross-region play for now means we play with players from our own region, which keeps things simple for a European guild like ours. And keep an eye on that character cap before you plan a whole army of alts. Share your thoughts in Discord!
